Drunk Motorist Faces Judge After Charges of Vehicular Manslaughter
A motorist who was allegedly drunk when he caused a head-on crash in Rancho Penasquitos in San Diego that killed the other driver pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while impaired and DUI causing great bodily injury.
Anthony Perez Rodriguez, 30, was allowed to remain free on his already posted $100,000 bail. He faces 12 years in prison if convicted in the death of 61-year-old Enid Mayer-Sheaf of Chula Vista.
San Diego police said Rodriguez was headed east in the 14100 block of Carmel Valley Road on July 22 when his Fiat 500 veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into the victim’s 1987 Chevy Nova shortly before 6:30 p.m.
Enid Mayer-Sheaf died at the scene.
During today’s arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright unsuccessfully argued for the defendant’s bail to be increased to $600,000, saying Rodriguez spent the day drinking at a San Diego Padres game, at the Tilted Kilt restaurant/bar, then in Pacific Beach.
Bright said that after the crash, Rodriguez told police he had consumed only one beer, one margarita, and one shot.
But the prosecutor said that 90 minutes after the accident, the defendant’s blood-alcohol level was measured at between .15 and .16 percent, which would have put his blood-alcohol level at about .18 or .19 percent at the time of the crash.
Bright alleged that given the blood-alcohol level, a person of Rodriguez’s height and weight would have had about 10 alcoholic drinks in his system when he was driving.
The prosecutor said that based on the tire friction marks, the victim was trying to avoid the crash by veering to the right when she was hit.
Bright said that after the crash, Rodriguez blamed the victim, saying she came into his lane of traffic.
The prosecutor added that the crash marked a double tragedy for the victim’s family, noting that Mayer-Sheaf was returning from the hospital where her mother-in-law had just died from an illness when the accident happened.
Defense attorney Jan Ronis told the judge that Rodriguez lives in San Diego, has no prior criminal record and works at a new car dealership.
Ronis said his client is already wearing an electronic device that alerts authorities if he’s been drinking.
Bright said, however, 70 percent of all DUI fatalities in the United States are caused by first-time DUI offenders.
Judge David Szumowski ordered Rodriguez to refrain from driving, drinking, and to surrender his temporary driver’s license issued after the crash.
A readiness conference was scheduled for Aug. 18 and a preliminary hearing for Sept. 24

Multi-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 8 in San Diego
On Sunday, April 6th in the city of San Diego there was an awful accident that occurred on Interstate 8 involving a Ford Explorer and multiple other vehicles. The accident left the three people in the Explorer ejected from their car. One of the victims was reported dead on the scene, and the other two left severely injured.
The accident first started around 1:40 a.m. The people inside the Ford were heading east when the driver of the vehicle lost control on the freeway near Hotel Circle. According to the California Highway Patrol, the car had flipped and caused the victims to be ejected from their seats. The three of them were found lying in the road. One individual involved in the accident sustained fatal injuries while the others were left with moderate to severe injuries. It was never confirmed or denied if the passengers in the Explorer were wearing any seat belts, but if you are in a vehicle make sure you take advantage of the safety equipment provided. The Eastbound 8 Freeway was shut down by local authorities temperately at Taylor Street. However, this raised all sorts of tension between commuters trying to get where they needed to go in a timely manner. There was even a fight that broke out between a motorist and a cab driver. Costa Mesa Four Car Accident
Costa Mesa was the sad setting for a car collision that turned into a hit and run on Tuesday October 28th. Allegedly the accident was caused by the driver of a red Toyota Corolla being under the influence while he was driving. Six total were injured in the crash and were taken to the hospital. The incident first started when Costa Mesa police Lt. Greg Scott tried to pull over the Corolla on Harbor Boulevard around 6:15 p.m. Refusing to stop, the driver kept driving further down the road towards Wilson Street.
From what Greg Scott said, The Corolla kept going and sideswiped a gray Ford pickup heading south on Harbor which was the start of all of the chaos. Then the truck was forced into a head on collision into a Chevrolet Equinox. The Equinox was hit so hard it began to spin out and smashed into a Hyundai Elantra that was heading toward the northern side of Harbor, then the Chevy ended off the road and into a local Chinese kitchen. When the fire department got there they inspected the building that had been hit and deemed that the damage was not severe enough to close or condemn the building which was great news for the business owners.
A total of 6 people injured in the car accident. Four of them were taken to the Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo for medical attention. The other two were sent to the UCI Medical Center in Orange. Police made a point to say that thankfully none of their injuries were a matter of life and death situation.
The driver of the Corolla did not get away free. Police arrested the driver and charged him with suspicion of felony driving under the influence and felony hit-and-run. The driver was then identified by police Tuesday night as Jose Chanico-Retana, 35, a resident of Costa Mesa. At this point, the investigation is still ongoing.
Harbor Boulevard was completely shut down in both directions by local police while the crash was cleaned up. Streets were reopened around 7:30 p.m.

The two parents were in the front two seats, and the three brothers were all in the back. Their car was stopped at a red light in a southbound lane on North Euclid Street. As they were stopped at the light waiting for it to change, the black truck, which was driven by Hunt, had rear-ended the back of the Camry. When the family had arrived at the hospital, one, the children had sadly lost his life at the age of 10 years old. Later the child was identified as Rafael Ramirez. While the passenger the Honda Civic was treated on site of the scene and did not seek further medical attention, the driver of the car was taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
